Q. What Do I Have to Do to Get Started?

A. The very first thing that you need to do is add keywords.

Since the Band Finder uses all these little "bits and pieces" in your description to match you to fan searches, you need to give us the bits and pieces.

There are currently three ways to add keywords to your account.  The first, and probably the easiest of the three, is by using our keyword tool.  The tool is set up to quickly gather everything we need to about your band and convert them into keywords to add to your account.

To use the keyword tool, simply log in to your account and click on the "Listing Tool" link in the top menu.  Make sure you don't have your pop-up blocker enabled or you won't be able to use the tool.  Once the tool is opened, it should take you a few minutes to pick out your keywords.

You can also add keywords one-by-one. To do this, click on "Keyword Manager" in your band management area, and then click on "Add a Single Keyword For Your Band".  This will take you to the single keyword tool. Fill out the info and choose your bid for that keyword. Once you press the "Add Listing" button, your new keyword is sent to our editors for approval before it is made live on our website.

Finally, you can add several keywords at once using the "Bulk Upload" tool.  This requires a bit more preparation.  To get there, click on the "Click here if you need to add multiple listings at once" link at the bottom of the "Add a Single Listing" form. Next, you need to open up a text editor, like Windows NotePad (any plain text editor will do), and make a list of keywords you want to add for your band in the text editor on your computer.  Remember, only one keyword per line with NO spaces.  Then, place your cursor at the end of the first keyword and press the TAB button to add a tab space. Now, type in your initial bid for that keyword (in the format of 0.01). Add another TAB space and type in your Band Name. Do this now with both your URL and your description -- with a TAB space before both (but NOT at the end -- see the bulk upload page for an example).

Once you've done this to your first keyword, you need to do this for the rest, as well. The easiest way is just to cut and paste the line from the end of the first keyword to the end of the description and then paste it next to all the other keywords. Each bit of info should be separated by a TAB space. Each new keyword listing should have its own line. Now go to the bulk upload page, copy the whole list and paste it into the box. Now press the "Add Listings" button. Your keywords will either be submitted for approval, or you will receive a message that describes to you what went wrong, if anything.

Maybe using the keyword tool would be easier.

The next step for getting started is managing your listings.

Q. How Can I Find My Band's Listing?

A. Try searching the Finder using keywords you know you've bid on -- such as your Band's name or city.  If you want to see your listing in action, try stringing a whole bunch of them together.  If you've received an email that says all your keywords were approved, your listing is definitely in there.

If your listing is waaaay too far back in the search results, you may want to adjust some of the keyword bids on your band. We've easily got hundreds of bands listed under each and every keyword, so you'll at least want to change your bid to 0.02 or more to crawl closer to the front pages.

For more information on keywords and bidding, you might want to read this, these, or even this.

Q. How Do I Check My Stats?

A. Your stats are available via your Band Finder management area.  Click on the "Your Account Stats" link in the top menu to have a look at your traffic.

Your stats will show you:

1) The date and the "single term" -- this is the actual keyword your account was deducted for (this is also considered the keyword that "found" you, so to speak, or the keyword you should focus on first in your bidding effort).
2) The entire search string (also useful info here)
3) URL the fan was sent to when they clicked (useful if you have several bands in your account)
4) The number of clicks for that specific keyword, search phrase, and URL
5) The total funds spent on those clicks

Q. How Do I Add Money To My Account?

A. To add money to your account and increase your search funds, click on the "Add Finder Fund$" link at the top menu.

You can add real money using your credit or debit card, PayPal account, or E-Gold account. All billing is handled securely by trusted secure 3rd-party merchant processors (2checkout.com, PayPal.Com, E-Gold.Com). Type in the amount you want to deposit (minimum 5.00 for credit and debit card orders, $2.00 minimum on PayPal orders) and press "Go". You will be taken to our processor for secure checkout and returned to your Band Finder account following completion of your payment. Your account balance will immediately reflect your new balance.

Even bands in the same genre are different.  In fact, even bands and artists that all claim to sound like the same artist are usually vastly different.  Searching for bands this way is like going to a dating site and searching for "girls" and "boys".

Credits and cash are evenly exchanged at a penny per credit, so $2.00 real money is $2.00 in your account.  Also, please note that when you are depositing money into your account, you are essentially buying credits.  All deposits are considered final.  There are no refunds on deposits.  Exceptions to this rule may include typographical errors, computer glitches, and form omission (like typing in $100 instead of $1.00, for instance, which of course we wouldn't be ridiculous enough to not give back to you -- we pride ourselves on being fairly sensible people).

Once you deposit money into your account, your card is not charged again until you go back to deposit more funds yourself.  All deposits are added on a case by case basis and must be manually added by you in the Band Finder management area.

Q. How Do I Change My Keyword Bids?
A. To change your keyword bids, simply click on your "Keyword Manager" link, type in the number of keywords you wish to edit at once in the "Edit Listings" box, and click the "Go" button.

A list of your keywords will appear on the next page, each with checkboxes next to the keyword.  On this page, you can see the keyword, your current ranking for that keyword, the recommended bid to bring that keyword to the first position in the search results, and the information for that keyword.

To change your keyword bid, check the box to the left of each listing you wish to update, scroll down to the bottom of the list and click "Edit Checked Listings".  You will be taken to a form to edit each keyword, one keyword at a time.  In the second box, where you see "Bid ($):", adjust the current value to a new one and press the "Save Changes" button at the bottom.  Make sure your bid is in the same format (0.01 is one cents, 1.00 is one dollar).

Note that your "Edit Keywords" screen will show you both the current position of the selected keyword, as well as the bid required to bring that keyword to the number one spot. Bidding on keywords is really it's own art form -- try reading a few of our tutorials to get a better feel for how to bid on your keywords if needed.

Updated bids do not need to go through editorial approval.

Q. How Do I Edit or Delete a Keyword (or Keywords) In My Account?

A. To delete a keyword or set of keywords, go to your "Keyword Manager", select the "Edit Listings" option and number of keywords you wish to view per page. Click on the checkboxes next to each keyword you wish to delete. Once you've selected the keywords you want to delete, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the "Delete Selected Keywords" button. Keywords are deleted IMMEDIATELY with NO prompt. Be sure to double check your keywords before you continue. However, if you accidentally delete a keyword, you may simply add it again with your "Keyword Manager".

The edit a keyword, click the checkboxes next to the keywords you want to edit and select the "Edit Checked Keywords" option at the bottom of the page. You will be shown your first keyword selected. To edit this keyword, simply change the information you need (including bid, if necessary) and press "Save Changes". You will then be able to edit the next keyword you selected, and so on.

Any changes you make to the keyword's title, URL, or description will be have to be approved by our content management department before the keyword goes live again in the Finder.

Q. What Is a "Catch-All" Listing?

A. A "Catch-All" listing is a listing that shows up when there are no other search result listings to display. If someone searches for "asdfhjkl;asjd" (which will obviously have no matches ... that we're aware of), our system displays our "Catch-All" listings, rather than show an empty table. Having a "Catch-All" listing is a way to bid on 'every other keyword' that isn't already covered in the database. While "Catch-All" listings are not very targeted, this can be a great way to get extra traffic from the Band Finder. "Catch-All" listings are handled a bit differently than standard listings.

Q. How Do I Add / Edit / Delete a Catch-All Listing?

A. To edit, create, or delete a catch-all listing, simply go to your "Keyword Manager" and click on the "Add / Delete / Edit your Catch-All Band Listing. Catch-All listings require the same information as other keywords (band or artist name, URL, description), but no actual keyword (of course). The same screen is used to both add and edit your Catch-All listing.
You can also use this screen to delete your Catch-All listing (by clicking on the "Delete Catch-All Listing" button near the bottom of the form. Catch-All listings, like other keywords, are subject to content management approval.

Q. How Do I Change My Band Info, Email Address, or Password?

A. To do this, simply click on the "Edit Band Info" at the top menu in your account manager. Changes to your band info take place immediately.

Q. How Can I Earn More Free Credits?

A. Anyone can earn free credits for the Finder in addition to their monthly free credits.
One of the best ways to earn free Finder Funds is to get started doing guest reviews for BandFreaks. Currently, you can earn $3.00 for a 300 - 400 word MP3 review and a chance to earn cash in a staff position. We've always got reviews in the queue. Contact avallon@BandFreaks for more information on doing reviews for us.

Also, our Band Finder has a built-in affiliate system. Currently, you can earn $1.00
for each band you refer to the Finder, 25% of clicks on bidded listings, and several cents per search. You can even place a search box on your site or add links to your site to earn extra funds for the Finder. This is a great way to keep funds going in your account and keep traffic coming out of it (in your general direction).

If you really want to get into it, you also get 10% of the deposits that your referred bands add to their account, and 5% of the deposits of whoever they refer make to their account. It's doesn't get too complicated, but it's still more ways to get extra funds going in the Finder.

Click on the "Affiliates" link in your Band Management area for more info on how to set this up.

.Q. How Long Does It Take Before I Start Receiving Traffic?

A. You should start receiving traffic the moment the keywords in your account have been approved by our content management department. Usually, this is no longer than 3 - 6 hours after you've set up and submitted your keywords. Once your keywords have been approved, the first thing you're going to want to do is check your keyword listings and adjust your bids. All of our bands get traffic, but bands at the bottom of the list in every search will always get a lot less traffic than bands further up on the list. Find a few keywords that really describe you and your band and increase your bid to climb the listings. Soon, you should be able to figure out what keywords fans are using to find you and adjust bids on your other keywords accordingly. Read this guide to getting started for more info on what to do after your keywords are approved.
